Research Areas
The main research theme is breast cancer. The studies look at how risk factors such as body mass index, family history and metabolic syndrome relate to the molecular subtypes of the tumour; whether inflammatory markers calculated from an ordinary blood count (neutrophil, lymphocyte and platelet ratios) are linked to the course of the disease; and the side effects of hormonal therapy and targeted therapy. Most of this work was carried out during subspecialty training at the medical oncology department of Hacettepe University.
A second group consists of multicentre studies. Two papers, one on adjuvant treatment after surgery for pancreatic cancer and one on the response to targeted therapy in kidney cancer, were published with pooled data from Turkish oncology research groups. A third group is made up of case reports on bile duct cancer, leukaemia and unusual patterns of spread.
Since completing his training, his clinical interest has moved towards comprehensive genomic profiling and the work of the molecular tumour board; congress abstracts in this area have been presented at national and international meetings. The papers on this page show the physician's research interests. Treatment for any individual patient is decided on the basis of guidelines and that patient's own findings.

National Publications and Congress Abstracts
Thirteen abstracts have been presented at international scientific meetings. Twelve were presented at the annual meetings of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013 and published in the meeting supplement of the Journal of Clinical Oncology; one was presented at the 2011 congress of the European Federation of Internal Medicine (EFIM). The topics were body mass index, blood group, inflammatory markers and short-course trastuzumab in breast cancer. A further abstract on the clinical use of advanced molecular analysis in lung cancer was presented at the 2017 ASCO annual meeting (DOI).
National publications include a case report in the Gaziantep Medical Journal and two chapters (metastatic breast cancer; special situations in breast cancer) in the Turkish edition of the MD Anderson manual of medical oncology, published by Nobel Tıp Kitabevi in 2014. The two abstracts that received awards at Turkish national congresses are described, with their topics, on the awards and memberships page.
Clinical Trials and Patient Participation
A clinical trial is a study in which a new drug or treatment schedule is tested in patients under defined rules and with ethics committee approval. Participation is voluntary and depends on the patient's written consent; a patient may withdraw at any time without losing access to standard treatment. Whether a patient is suitable for a trial is a matter for assessment only; no promise is made that a particular trial will be available. Current trials and the process for off-label applications in Türkiye are discussed, with dates, in the blog.
How to Access the Papers
The full text of each article is available from the journal page. Some journals require a subscription for the full text, but the abstract is always free to read. A PubMed search for the author name Petekkaya I lists the abstracts of all indexed articles, and a DOI link opens the article page on the journal's website directly.
If you would like to relate a paper to your own diagnosis, you can bring the abstract to your consultation; the physician will explain whether and how the study applies to your situation. His training and current post are described on the Prof. Dr. H. Ibrahim Petekkaya page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the full publication list?
All 26 articles in international peer-reviewed journals are listed in the table on this page with year, journal and a link. Articles with a DOI link directly to the journal page; the others link to a PubMed search for the title. Congress abstracts and book chapters are listed under a separate heading. The same articles can be found on PubMed by searching for the author name Petekkaya I. ORCID and Google Scholar profile links will be added here once they are set up.
Which cancer types does the research cover?
Most of the articles are about breast cancer: risk factors, molecular subtypes, inflammatory blood markers, and the side effects of hormonal and targeted therapy. Other papers report multicentre data on pancreatic cancer and kidney cancer, and case reports on bile duct cancer, leukaemia and unusual sites of spread. One paper discusses the obstacles facing clinical trials in Türkiye. Later congress work concerns molecular profiling in lung cancer.
What do these papers mean for patients?
The papers show which questions the physician has studied; they are not treatment recommendations. Treatment decisions follow current ESMO and NCCN guidelines together with the patient's own pathology and molecular findings, and the result of a single study is not applied directly to an individual. Each entry in the table carries a one-sentence summary written for patients, so that you can see what the paper looked at without reading the abstract.
Where are citation metrics shown?
Citation counts, meaning the number of times a paper has been cited by other papers, are not published on this page. They can be looked up in Google Scholar, Web of Science or Scopus by searching for the article title; journal pages reached through a DOI link usually show them as well. Citation counts reflect the academic reach of a study, not the physician's clinical practice, and they are not a measure of treatment quality.
How often is this list updated?
The list is updated when something changes rather than on a fixed calendar. When a new article, abstract or book chapter is published, the page is reviewed within 30 days and the last-updated date is changed. Corrections to links or spelling do not change the date. The last-updated line at the top of the page shows when the list was last checked, and the same date appears in the page's structured data.
