Congress Awards
Congress awards are given to abstracts selected by the scientific committee from among all the work submitted to a scientific meeting. Two abstracts on which Prof. Dr. H. Ibrahim Petekkaya was a co-author received awards at national oncology congresses in Türkiye. Both studies were carried out at the medical oncology department of Hacettepe University using data from patients with breast cancer. The place and dates of each congress will be added as they are confirmed from the congress abstract books.
| Congress and award | Abstract |
|---|---|
| 4th Medical Oncology Congress. First prize. | Do the known breast cancer risk factors have the same effect on the development of luminal, HER2-positive and triple-negative subtypes? |
| 9th National Oncology Congress. Oral presentation award. | The effect of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) inhibition on survival and recurrence in patients with pathological N3a breast cancer |
What the Award-Winning Studies Looked At
The first study compares the three main subtypes of breast cancer: the hormone receptor-positive luminal type, the HER2-positive type and the triple-negative type. It asks whether known risk factors, such as number of births, breastfeeding, age at menopause and body weight, have the same effect in each subtype. The full journal article based on the same data was published in The Breast in 2013; the reference is on the publications page.
The second study looks at whether RAS inhibitors, blood pressure drugs of the ACE inhibitor and angiotensin receptor blocker classes, are linked to the course of breast cancer in patients with extensive lymph node involvement. It was published as a journal article in the Journal of BUON in 2015. Both studies are observational; their findings are not treatment recommendations, and treatment for any patient is decided by the physician on the basis of that patient's own findings.
Please note: A congress award means that a study was selected by a scientific committee; it is not a measure of clinical outcome or treatment quality. This page records only the name of the award, the awarding body and the topic of the abstract.
Certificate of Appreciation, Izmir Tinaztepe University
A certificate of appreciation was presented at a ceremony for contributions to scientific work in oncology.
Society Memberships
Membership of a professional society gives the physician regular access to guideline updates, consensus reports and congress programmes in the field. Only confirmed memberships and roles are listed below; international society memberships will be added as they are confirmed.
- Turkish Society of Medical Oncology (TTOD)
- The national society of medical oncologists in Türkiye. It publishes national guidelines and consensus reports, organises the Medical Oncology Congress and produces patient information. Member.
- Turkish Oncology Group (TOG)
- A national research group that runs multicentre clinical studies. Prof. Dr. H. Ibrahim Petekkaya has served within the group; the name and period of the role will be added once they are confirmed from the group's own records.
- International society activity
- Twelve of the thirteen abstracts presented at international congresses were given at the annual meetings of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) between 2009 and 2013. ESMO and ASCO membership status will be added to this list once confirmed by the physician.
How Memberships Relate to Clinical Practice
Treatment decisions in medical oncology rest on the guidelines of ESMO (the European Society for Medical Oncology), the NCCN (the National Comprehensive Cancer Network in the United States) and the Turkish Society of Medical Oncology. These guidelines are publicly available regardless of membership; membership makes it easier to follow updates and attend educational meetings. For an international patient, this means that the treatment discussed in Izmir is set against the same European and American guidelines used at home. Which treatment each guideline recommends in a given situation is written, with the source, on the individual pages in the cancer types section.
Editorial and Committee Roles
A committee role means taking part in a body that makes decisions about a patient's care or about a research group's work. Prof. Dr. H. Ibrahim Petekkaya has served within the Turkish Oncology Group; the name and period of the role will be added once they are confirmed from the group's own records.
At clinical level, the committee that meets most often is the molecular tumour board. At this meeting the medical oncologist, the pathologist and the clinical molecular oncology team review the results of comprehensive genomic profiling (tumour genetic testing) together and match treatment options to the level of evidence in the guidelines. The board's conclusions are explained to the patient by the physician.
Peer review is the assessment of a manuscript by experts in the field before a journal publishes it. Records of peer review are kept by the journals themselves, and no list of journals is published here. Questions about awards, memberships or roles can be sent to the email address on the contact page; media coverage is listed on the press page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What were the awards given for?
Both awards were given for studies on breast cancer. The first prize at the 4th Medical Oncology Congress went to an abstract asking whether the known risk factors for breast cancer have the same effect in the luminal, HER2-positive and triple-negative subtypes. The oral presentation award at the 9th National Oncology Congress went to a study of whether blood pressure drugs of the RAS inhibitor class affect the course of breast cancer with extensive lymph node involvement.
What do society memberships mean for patients?
Membership of a professional society shows that the physician follows the guideline updates, congress presentations and education programmes in the field. Societies such as the Turkish Society of Medical Oncology publish consensus reports and support tumour board networks. Membership is not on its own a measure of treatment outcome; treatment for each patient is decided on the basis of guideline recommendations and that patient's own findings.
Is he an ESMO member?
His international society activity to date consists of twelve of his thirteen international congress abstracts, which were presented at ASCO annual meetings between 2009 and 2013. The ESMO and NCCN guidelines that inform clinical decisions are publicly available and do not depend on membership of either society.
How can memberships be verified?
National society memberships are verified through the society's own membership records, and international memberships through the society's member directory or a membership certificate. The official websites of the Turkish Society of Medical Oncology and ESMO are linked in the sources section of this page. Patients may ask about membership during a consultation. Congress awards are recorded in the abstract books of the congresses concerned, under the abstract title.
How often is this page updated?
The page is updated within 30 days whenever a new award, membership or committee role is added or an existing membership ends. There is no scheduled bulk update, and corrections to spelling or links do not change the last-updated date. The last-updated line at the top of the page shows when the content was last reviewed, and the same date is recorded in the page's structured data.
