About Prof. Dr. H. Ibrahim Petekkaya
Medical oncology is the branch of internal medicine that treats cancer with drugs: chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy and hormonal therapy. The medical oncologist works alongside the surgeon and the radiation oncologist and usually coordinates the overall treatment plan.
His name appears in some directories without the initial, and in Turkish sources as Prof. Dr. H. İbrahim Petekkaya; the forms "Hacı İbrahim" and "Halil İbrahim" are not correct. In clinical practice he places particular weight on matching treatment to the molecular features of the tumour, and for this purpose he works with the clinical molecular oncology work described further down this page.
Meet the Team
A short film on how the clinical molecular oncology team works.
Where He Practises
Prof. Dr. H. Ibrahim Petekkaya practises at Egepol Hospital, a private hospital in the Konak district of Izmir, on the Aegean coast of Türkiye. The address is Güneşli Mah. 507 Sok. No:3, Konak, Izmir. Consultations, treatment planning and systemic treatment all take place at this hospital.
He previously worked at Izmir Tınaztepe University in the same city. Telephone numbers and addresses from that period are no longer valid. Current contact details, directions and opening hours are given on the contact and appointments page.
Training and Qualifications
His medical degree and both specialist qualifications were obtained at three Turkish universities. Turkish specialist training follows a national curriculum and ends with a board examination; subspecialty training in medical oncology is a further three-year programme taken after the internal medicine qualification. The table below lists each step by year, institution and field.
| Year | Institution | Field |
|---|---|---|
| 2000 | Atatürk University Faculty of Medicine, Erzurum | Medical degree (MD) |
| 2003 to 2008 | Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine, Adana | Residency in internal medicine |
| 2010 to 2013 | Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Ankara | Subspecialty training in medical oncology |
Six Years of Molecular Oncology Work
The team examines which DNA and RNA change is driving each patient’s tumour and plans treatment around it where a drug with scientific evidence exists.
Academic Appointments
Prof. Dr. H. Ibrahim Petekkaya holds the titles of associate professor (docent) and full professor. The years in which the titles were awarded, and the awarding institutions, are not stated on this page; they can be confirmed from the YÖK Akademik record kept by the Council of Higher Education of Türkiye. Before his present post he worked at Izmir Tınaztepe University.
He now practises at Egepol Hospital as a medical oncologist. His role is to plan and deliver systemic treatment, meaning drug treatment that acts throughout the body, for adults with cancer.
Clinical Interests
His clinical work covers the drug treatment of adult solid tumours, that is cancers of organs and tissues rather than blood cancers. The main groups are breast cancer, lung cancer, gastrointestinal cancers, skin cancers, gynaecological cancers, glioblastoma and sarcomas. Each group has its own information page in the cancer types section.
In terms of treatment, his interests are chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy, and the way molecular tests are used to select between them. Treatment is chosen by the physician on the basis of stage, pathology and molecular findings for each individual patient.
Clinical Molecular Oncology Team
Prof. Dr. H. Ibrahim Petekkaya works with Ezel Bildik, clinical molecular oncology, when molecular findings are assessed. The work starts with a technical check of the next-generation sequencing (NGS) report produced from tumour tissue or blood: the gene list covered, read depth, tumour cell content and the reference build used are all reviewed. A report that is technically inadequate is referred back to the laboratory before any interpretation is made.
Each variant (gene change) in the report is then classified. Germline variants are ranked against ACMG criteria and tumour changes against ESCAT evidence tiers, with OncoKB searched for treatment evidence, ClinVar for pathogenicity records and cBioPortal for how often the change is seen. Variants reported as of uncertain significance (VUS) are kept on a separate list and revisited when their classification is updated.
Findings are then matched to treatment options: licensed drugs, options that would require off-label use, and open clinical trials in Türkiye and abroad are listed separately. Where an inherited risk is suspected, the family history is assessed with a pedigree and a genetic counselling recommendation is prepared. The summary file is presented at the molecular tumour board, a meeting at which physicians from different specialties review the molecular findings together.
The same method is applied to genomic tests carried out elsewhere: a report sent for a second opinion goes through this review first. Treatment decisions are always made by the physician; the molecular oncology work covers analysis, classification and reporting. The method is described in detail on the comprehensive genomic profiling and hereditary cancer risk assessment pages.
Consultations at Egepol Hospital
Prof. Dr. H. Ibrahim Petekkaya announces the start of consultations at the oncology department of Egepol Hospital in Izmir.
Publications, Awards and Memberships
He has 26 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, 13 abstracts presented at international congresses, twelve of them at the annual meetings of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and two book chapters. Most of the articles concern breast cancer: risk factors, molecular subtypes, inflammatory markers and the side effects of treatment. The full list with journal, year and DOI is on the publications page.
Two abstracts received awards at the 4th Medical Oncology Congress and the 9th National Oncology Congress in Türkiye. These awards and his professional society memberships are listed on the awards and memberships page, and his interviews and video talks are collected on the press page.
About patient reviews: This website does not publish patient reviews, thank-you messages or patient stories. Turkish regulation on health-service information (the regulation of 12 November 2025) does not allow patient opinions to be used for promotional purposes. Independent reviews can be found on the Google Business Profile and in physician directories.
How a Consultation Works
At the first consultation the physician reviews the pathology report, the imaging results and any molecular test report. The stage of the disease, the subtype of the tumour and the patient's general condition are assessed together, and any missing tests are requested. The treatment plan is then discussed with the patient, taking guideline recommendations and the patient's own preferences into account. For patients already under treatment elsewhere, a second opinion follows the same steps.
